ROCKHAMPTON AMATEUR MOVIE AND CAMERA CLUB
This Society represents a development from the Amateur Cine Club of Central Queensland whose activities have now been extended to cover both cine and still workers. The club now numbers among its members some particularly keen, enthusiastic and advanced amateurs in both branches of photography. It is felt that the future of this club is a particularly happy one.

At the first fixture held by the new club twenty-five members attended. The outing was held at Lake Mary, about 25 miles from Rockhampton, and a thoroughly enjoyable day was experienced by all who attended, the weather being almost ideal for photographic work.

Lake Mary is a sanctuary for birds and animals, and wild life generally was found to be comparatively tame, many members thus securing some fine shots of birds with both movie and still cameras.

ROCKHAMPTON AMATEUR MOVIE AND CAMERA CLUB
The Amateur Cine Club of Central Queensland finding its numbers depleted owing to members enlisting in the fighting forces and being transferred elsewhere, decided to endeavor to form a new club which would include all interested in amateur photography, both "movie" and "still". A sub-committee was appointed to discuss the matter with "still" workers, with the result that on August 20, at the School of Arts, the first annual meeting of the new organization was held. The name selected for the new organization was the Rockhampton Amateur Movie and Camera Club. The rules of the new club were drawn up and the following officers were elected: President, Mr F. Horner: vice-president, Mr C. Kerr; hon. secretary Mr I. Stephens; hon. treasurer, Mr F. Wilson; hon. organizer, Mr D. Vaughan; committee of management, Messrs E. Head, T. Mungall, T. Bencke, and N.H. Speck.

It was decided to ask the Mayor (Mr R.W. Evans) and Mr A.A. Boyd to accept positions of patrons of the club.

It was decided to hold regular monthly meetings on the second Thursday in each month, at which lectures would be given and competitions held, and on Thursday evening, September 12, the first of these was held at the club room. A lecture, "Camera Construction and Lenses", was given by Mr Stephens and competitions for both "movie" workers and "still" were well supported.

In the "movie" class the best film was entered by Mr C. Kerr, who won the prize, while another by Mr E. Head was a close second. For the "still" workers there were two classes: (1) Enlargement: any subject or size; (2) contact print: any subject or size. The first class was won by Mr N.H. Speck with a photograph of a dog's head. A landscape by Mr Torrence was specially commended by the Judges, and prints by Mr Playford, Mr Wilson and Mr Stephens were selected for special mention. The second class was won by Mr Stephens with an interior; a portrait by Mr Scrine being highly commended. The entries consisted of 43 enlargements, 21 contact prints, and five movie films.

There were twenty members present at the meeting. At the conclusion the president, Mr F. Horner, expressed his appreciation of the interest shown by the camera users of Rockhampton, as evidenced by their response to the formation of the new club, and he said he hoped the club would grow.

On Sunday, September 15, the club held an outing at the Scenic Road. Yeppoon, which was very well attended, and although the weather was not the best for photography, all present seemed to enjoy themselves, and a satisfactory number of exposures were made.

All interested in photography are invited to join the club. The membership fees are: Members, 10s. per annum (payable half-yearly); lady members, 5s. per annum; Junior members (under 18), 2s. 6d. per annum. There are already members in all classes.

The monthly meetings will be held at the club room on the second Thursday in each month. At each meeting there will be a lecture, and competitions for "movie" workers will be held quarterly, while competitions for "still" workers every second month. In each case there will be a pet subject. Intending members should inquire of Mr Vaughan at Kodak Ltd., East Street, or the secretary, Mr Stephens, at the Commonwealth Health Laboratory, Quay Lane.

ROCKHAMPTON AMATEUR MOVIE AND CAMERA CLUB
This newly-formed Club, now firmly established, has decided to hold regular monthly meetings, and, in addition, regular outings are to be arranged by the Club Organizer, Mr. D.F. Vaughan. A lecture was recently delivered by Mr. I.F. Stephens, entitled “Camera Construction and Lenses", a forerunner of a series scheduled for the ensuing six months.

The first competition included classes for “still” workers, comprising enlargements and contact prints, any subject or size, while in the movie section members were asked to submit either 8mm or 16mm films of any subject.

The enlargement section was won by Mr. N.H. Speck and Mr. A. Torrence specially commended. Enlargements by Messrs. M.E. Playford, F. Wilson, and I. Stephens were given special mention.

Contacts; First, Mr. I. Stephens; Mr. L. Serine, highly commended.

In the movie section, first prize was won by Mr. C. Kerr, who submitted an 100-ft. 16mm. Kodachrome entitled “A Day at Emu Park", while another Kodachrome Film, by Mr. E. Head, was second.

On 15th September the Club held a successful outing to the Scenic Road, Yeppoon.

It was decided by the members that they will shortly make a display of “stills” and movies, to raise funds for local Patriotic Funds.

FILMS IN COLOUR
SUCCESSFUL MOVIE EVENING

The proposal by the Rockhampton Amateur Movie and Camera Club to screen the work of members at exhibitions for patriotic purposes was launched under encouraging circumstances last night at a movie evening at the Congregational Church, Murray Street, arranged by the Congregational Girls Club.

Under the guidance of Mr C. Kerr at the projector, the spectators were taken on a colorful tour of Rockhampton and coastal beauty spots, North Queensland, Canberra, Sydney, and other centers. Most of the films were in natural color and set off to perfection the rich hues of local flora. Bougainvillea on the Range provided a number of delightful studies, which were rivaled by massed flowering trees and shrubs of Canberra. Sunrise at Emu Park introduced beautiful panoramic views of that resorts well-known seascapes. Townsville, Canberra, Hume Weir, Sydney and its harbour, beaches and zoo were visited on the screen.

Not the least interesting were "shots", also in color, of gay Neon signs and fireworks.

Among topical events pictured were the march through the city of the A.I.F., the flood at Easter and the effects of a severe hailstorm near Westwood.

Comedy sketches added variety to the program.

FAREWELL EVENING TO MR N.H. SPECK
The Rockhampton Amateur Movie and Camera Club recently tended a farewell evening to Mr N.H. Speck, who in the past has been one of the club's prominent members.

Mr Speck has been a very keen amateur photographer for many years. In 1941 he consented to judge entries in the art and photographic sections at the Rockhampton Agricultural Society's Show. His placings proved fair and just and showed a keen appreciation of the contestants merits. He now leaves Rockhampton to take up a new position in Sydney.

The guest of honor provided the entertainment by consenting to project many of his excellent color slides, which proved to be very interesting.

ROCKHAMPTON AMATEUR MOVIE AND CAMERA CLUB
The activities of the Club are now once again in full swing after a war-time recess.

At the May meeting, Mr. J. Lonergan gave a very interesting talk on “Photography in Rockhampton Twenty Years Ago”, illustrating his talk with some copies of the A.P.-R. dated 1923, 1924 and 1927. It was an interesting speculation how many of the prints of those days would win-prizes now. While some of the photographs would hold their own with most modern work, many seemed very flat and poorly composed.

In the photographic competitions recently conducted by the Rockhampton Agricultural Society, and judged by Mrs. D.F. Vaughan, all the prizes, with one exception, were won by members of this Society; the exception being none other than Mr. J.P. Carney ARPS. These awards went to T.C. Bencke, G.W. MacDonald and A.G. Smart. A point worthy of note is that the principal prizes went to enlargements from 35 mm and “Duo” films of Kodak manufacture, exposed in a Kodak 35 Retina and Six-20 “Duo” respectively. Very favorable comment and extensive publicity was given to the exhibition by the local press.

A meeting of the Committee of the Rockhampton Agricultural Society was held at the Society's office, on Thursday.

A letter was received from the Rockhampton Amateur Movie and Camera Club expressing appreciation of every member of the excellent judging of the photographic section of the recent show and asked that their appreciation be conveyed to the judge, Mrs D.F. Vaughan.

At the July meeting, T. Bencke spoke on “35mm Photography”, and said the 35mm camera is a precision instrument, providing an easy-to-carry, inconspicuous quickly-usable camera, a great advantage in candid or child photography. Its lens had a short focal length and a wide aperture, somewhat long focus for the size of the film, giving, at will, extreme depth of field or only a very narrow band in focus. The combination of lens and shutter make photography possible in many difficult situations. The disadvantages, derived from the great degree of enlargement necessary, were grain, scratches and defects in the film, all much more noticeable in large magnifications. Most could be minimized by care in processing; accuracy of exposure and development time and temperature, a fine-grain developer like DK2O or D 25. The use of a wetting agent in developer and fixing solution, all help in the final result. Washing a film under the tap is a risky business in the tropics owing to the variations in temperature of the water and a series of five or six washes in a fresh change of water at the proper temperature, each four or five minutes, gave, the speaker said, perfectly satisfactory results.

ROCKHAMPTON AMATEUR MOVIE AND CAMERA CLUB
Mr. F. Wilson, a member now in the RAAF, wrote describing some of his photographic experiences in the Middle East, apparently proving that photography in the desert has its problems.

Mr. C. Kerr showed a number of movie films; “The Seaside — Yeppoon and Emu Park”, “Some Gardens Round Rockhampton”, “My Country” and “The Barrier Reef”.

Mr. J. Smart talked on “Interior Industrial Photography” on September 13th. He said a suitable viewpoint is often difficult to get, obstacles having frequently to be removed or the exposure made through a window. Lighting had to be watched to avoid glare and troublesome reflections in polished machinery. A single flash near the camera was generally unsuitable; in fact, the lecturer preferred daylight suitably controlled with blinds or shutters. The possibility of halation from windows, artificial lights, etc., had to be guarded against, though modern films were not so much affected.

A small stop, to reduce halation (?Ed.) and give depth of focus, makes a long exposure necessary Several exposures, differing by a factor of 4, could be given to advantage. It was interesting to note that using Panatomic-X film, printable negatives could be obtained using varied exposures of 4, 16 and 60 seconds at f11.

AMATEUR CAMERA CLUB
With supplies of materials steadily becoming more plentiful, amateur photographers are now able to return to those provoking paths of invention and discovery which they were compelled to leave during the war period. As with many other things, the war produced numerous technical advances and improvements in method, much of which, no doubt, will in due course reach the amateur camera man, leading him into more of those problems, the solving of which is, perhaps, the most fascinating aspect of photography.

To sort out the new technique, to solve the stubborn "standard" difficulties, and then to be able to argue about them; all this suggests the need for some sort of forum. To meet that need, and to expand interest generally in the pursuit of photography, a move has now been made to revive the Rockhampton Amateur Movie and Camera Club.

Before the war the club could claim some 50 enthusiastic members, and both movie and "still" camera work was well represented. Meetings were held regularly at which there were useful exchanges of knowledge, while specimens of work entered in various competitions showed pleasing combinations of artistry and technical skill. To none was the club more useful than to the beginner, who found profit in the advice and general helpfulness of the more experienced members.

The revival of such a club should be of real interest to the amateur, and everyone contemplating membership should get in touch with Mr C. Warren (Commonwealth Health Laboratory), Mr T. Bencke (AMP Society) or Mr J. Smart (Railway).

ROCKHAMPTON AMATEUR MOVIE AND CAMERA CLUB
Due to unavoidable circumstances, the club has been in temporary recess for a short period, but now has been reformed. All members are quite keen to extend their photographic knowledge, and with the aid of the more experienced members, they maintain continued interest in the club and its activities, meetings being held every second Thursday.

Since the re-formation the lectures delivered were: “The Properties of Light and Their Uses”, by Dr K.C. Porter (President); “Enlargers and Enlarging”, by R. Gabriel (Secretary); “Practical Portraiture with Demonstration,” by Mr. F. Webb (Kodak Ltd.).

The practical portraiture demonstration was very enthusiastically attended, and all members had at least one camera, some bringing two. Light meters and range finders were well to the fore, and on the whole members had an excellent night.

Also during the year were held two competitions and an outing.

Nights not scheduled for lectures are taken up by discussion groups (on a selected subject) or for print criticism. We find that this seems to bring members closer together and eliminate bashfulness amongst the inexperienced or younger ones.
